For my portrait work I take both formals (with backdrop, flash, natural light, and careful posing) and lifestyle (capturing the person in a more natural setting doing something that they enjoy - which is usually not posing for a photo!). I follow this same approach when I photograph weddings or special events, i.e., combining formal and candid images in order to "tell the story" of the event. For those of you who are looking for samples of my Senior Photography you can find them at the link in the Gallery or in the Portraits in the Park session. See the Sidebar on the left for my current "Specials" for Senior portraits.

My landscape and nature photography tends to take place around vacations. Fortunately we have friends and family who live in interesting locations (California, northern Michigan, Colorado and Texas) plus living in Bloomington, Indiana we have some great nearby spots that make it easy and enjoyable to get out with (and without) a camera.

I am an active member of WPPI (Wedding and Portrait Professionals International), NAPP (National Association of Photoshop Professionals), and the Bloomington Photography Club. I have had photos published in Bloom Magazine, have been an official photographer for the Indianapolis Motor Speedway (Indianapolis 500), and also photograph special events for the Sycamore Land Trust.

    Enjoy your visit!

  • Question & Answers

I thought you would find it useful to have an area where you could find out more about my portrait, wedding and landscape photography. Instead of just doing an "About" page for each of these I took a Question and Answer approach. I tried to think of the typical questions people looking at this site might ask if they are interested in my services and then answered those. You can find links to these at the "Q&A" button above.

Wedding & Engagement Favorites

Yosemite National Park, California

We visited Yosemite National Park with one of our sons and his soon-to-be wife two summers ago.  Pictures cannot do the park justice.  I believe I took over 600 photographs during the three days we were in the park itself.  These are just a few of my favorites meant to give you a small idea of what Yosemite has to offer.  We were there in mid-June which was a perfect time for us to visit.  Depending on the snow melt Yosemite Falls and the Merced river may, or may not, have a significant amount of flow, but as you can see from these that was not a concern when we were there.

Architecture – Washington DC Reflections

While visiting Washington D.C. recently I took a number of photos while going to and from meetings.  One of the themes I enjoy looking for and photographing is reflections.  Part of the challenge of shooting these is with trying to get the architecture while missing the traffic.  For some shots the best photographic vantage spot would have been in the middle of the street – a location that did not seem to be particularly healthy given the amount of traffic!

Senior Photography – Portraits in the Park

For the past couple of years, the Portrait Interest Group of the Bloomington Photography Club has had the opportunity to get together for a group session that is coordinated by Kip May.  Kip uses his extensive contacts and experience to line up a number of models (the number varies depending on how many photographers RSVP) and how many small groups are necessary.  We spend a couple of hours in small groups working with the models.  I have lead a session each of the two years and find the experience and opportunity to be a lot of fun and believe that everyone else does as well.  Here are a few of my favorites from this years event.  The two models I worked with were Jade Jefferson and Kim Bomgardner.  Both were great.  Kim has been a frequent model for Kip’s workshops; I believe that this was the first time that Jade had been asked to model.  While neither are high school seniors, for those of you looking for your senior photos these will give you an idea of the type of portrait work I do.

Hibiscus – close-up

Depending on the time of year and how the flowers are blooming in Bloomington, I try my hand at macro-photography.  There needs to be no wind and good light for these to come out as almost any wind will cause the photos to blur when getting this close to the subject.  These are a few photos of Hibiscus flowers that I have taken over the past year or so.
